Did you know that chewing gum can actually be good for your teeth? It’s true! Chewing sugar-free gum has been proven by many studies to help prevent cavities.

Chewing gum does this by promoting saliva production in the mouth. Saliva is the body’s first defense against cavities. It cleans food particles and debris away from teeth, and distributes beneficial substances to the mouth to help neutralize acids.

Of course, other things promote saliva production, such as sucking on candy or chewing sugar-sweetened gum. Unfortunately, the sugars present in the candy or gum negate the positive effects, as it feeds the acid-producing bacteria that cause cavities.

It is for this reason that many sugar-free gums have earned the ADA Seal of Acceptance. This seal indicates that the product (in this case, sugar-free gum) does what is says it does (in this case, help prevent cavities by stimulating saliva production). Products that have earned the Seal have proven themselves by passing rigorous testing for both safety and effectiveness. The Seal cannot be purchased; it must be earned. This ensures you are getting a quality product.
